With a lift and some helpful friends, you’ll have that Carrera engine swap done in a flash
The Porsche 356, despite its rise to collector status in recent years, remains a simple, easy-to-work-on machine. Its Volkswagen Beetle origins means access to the rear-mounted engine is extremely straightforward. In fact, it’s so easy to get to the engine that it takes three mechanics less than nine minutes to separate it completely from the car.
State of Art, a clothing company in the Netherlands that doubles as a Porsche museum, needed to remove the engine from its beautiful blue 356 A Speedster. So, with three mechanics, some simple tools, and a camera, they went to work dropping the block from the Porsche’s rear.
In just 8 minutes and 39 seconds, they were able to fully disconnect the 356 from its engine, and lift it out of the way. That’s an impressive feat for any car, no matter the simplicity. If only new cars were the same, we’d be at the dealer a lot less often.
