How a Man With No Legs and Only One Arm Drives His Truck

Thanks to engineering, you don’t necessarily need two feet to drive your dream truck.

Meet Kenny. Kenny’s truck is no average pickup, but that’s because Kenny is no average driver. A triple amputee, Kenny has no legs and only one arm, but that doesn’t keep him from driving, thanks to technology and, of course, devotion.

Kenny’s unique toolbox of tech was showcased in a recent video on Smarter Every Day, when he shows-off his truck and gives the series’ host a ride. Kenny operates his entire truck by using hand controls and motorized parts. To get into his vehicle he transfers himself out of his wheelchair and onto a lift, that is attached to the bottom of his truck. While sitting outside his truck, he hooks his chair to a crane, and with a press of a button the linear actuator begins to slowly and very precisely lift his chair off the ground and places it into the bed of the truck.

Once inside the vehicle, he actually removes his prosthetic hand, and screws on a different one that is more suitable for driving. His driving hand looks similar to a wrench and clamps down onto the hand controls on his left side. By moving his driving hand forward and backward he is pulling a lever that is connected to the gas and brake pedals underneath, he can easily control the speed of the truck.

You can watch Kenny in the video demonstrate how he uses all the technology that not only gave him the ability to drive, but also gave him back his independence after becoming a triple amputee. As long as you want it bad enough, anything is possible.
