A US couple who bought lottery tickets using money they stole from the shop they worked at have been caught after they won $1.4 million.

Pennsylvania Police claim Joan Lechleitner, 51, and her fiancé, Kerry Titus, 54, along with two other Agway Cressona employees, rang up fake returns and pocketed the money.

The fake return racket took place over a five-year period, according to police.

Lechleitner had purchased the winning lottery ticket from the business in September, 2015.

She and Titus purchased a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck with the lottery win and told The Republican Herald they also planned to use the win to pay for their honeymoon in Mexico and to build a pool in their backyard.

The employees were caught after store owner, Ronal Yordy, reportedly installed hidden cameras.

Mr Yordy told police he was forced to borrow money to keep the store afloat following the thefts.

All four suspects are facing charges and preliminary hearings will commence on July 5.

They each face four counts of conspiracy and one each of theft, theft by deception, receiving stolen property and tampering with records.
